VA BIRDers,
Rich Rieger and Kim Peacock split up a good sized crowd for the regular Sunday
morning Field Trip at Dyke Marsh, sponsored by the Friends of Dyke Marsh and
free to all. Highlight of the day was a Marsh Wren of which nearly everybody
got great views. Other trip highlights were Lesser Scaup, Ruby-throated
Hummingbird, nearly a half dozen each of Great Crested Flycatchers and E.
Kingbirds, Cedar Waxwings, White-eyed Vireo, Yellow-throated Vireo (great looks
at this one, too!), Warbling Vireos, Yellow Warblers, Blackpoll Warblers,
Scarlet Tanager, a dozen Orchard Orioles and a half dozen Baltimore Orioles.
The poor weather this morning concentrated the swifts and swallows off the
picnic area. You could see the Chimney Swifts arriving from the south by the
score as they continued on northward relatively low to the Potomac. The
swallows were dominated by nearly a hundred Barn Swallows which cruised for
insects over the mudflats in Hunting Creek Bay.
