VA BIRDers,
A Chilly and a bit windy morning (but sunny and surprisingly pleasant out of
the wind) met a handful of birders on the regular Sunday morning (8am) Field
Trip at Dyke Marsh, sponsored by the Friends of Dyke Marsh and free to all.
Highlight species today was a Blue-headed Vireo, weakly singing and briefly
observed by a few along Haul Road. Other notables today were only 9
Double-crested Cormorants on the Potomac, 3 Green-winged Teals hanging out with
some Mallards in the little gut, several Bald Eagles, a Sharp-shinned and
Red-tailed Hawk, 14 American Coot, Winter Wren, a Hermit Thrush doing its
whistling call, a single Cedar Waxwing, and several Yellow-rumped Warblers.
I should also mention that yesterday, 21 Great Egrets posted up on the wooden
pilings at Port O-Vecchio after sunset. And, not one but TWO Cattle Egrets
were present!
