VA BIRDers,
The regular Sunday field trip to Dyke Marsh (sponsored by the Friends of Dyke
Marsh and free to all) met with fine warm weather, overcast and slightly cloudy
skies and a great showing of Bald Eagles. Five immatures sat on the Hunting
Creek mudflats whilst another perched in the bay snag. And an adult was
spotted in trees as we walked down Haul Road. Other highlights were a great
Winter Wren showing with 7 noted including one singing - looks like we are at
peak of their migration!
Further down the trail we pished up a Fox Sparrow mixed in with good numbers of
Song, Swamps and White-throateds. A couple of Fields and a Junco were noted,
too. We heard a nearby Eastern Towhee calling from the woods near the Big Gut.
On the way back, 2 Red-shouldereds repeatedly called and circled over the Haul
Road woods.
At sunset, I tallied gulls noting ca. 890 Lauging Gulls - a relatively high
total for this calendar week here; if the numbers hold for another week it
could mean good CBC counts. Also, 24 Great Egrets came into roost on the
wooden pilings near Port-o-Vechio.
