VA BIRDers,
Ed Eder led the regular Sunday morning Field Trip at Dyke Marsh - sponsored
by the Friends of Dyke Marsh at 0800 each Sunday (except during CBC season)
and open to all. Top bird was a Marsh Wren along the dogleg. Also reported
was an excellent raptor showing - with Northern Harrier, Bald Eagles,
Red-tailed Hawks, and Red-shouldered Hawks. Unusual for this location were
Hermit Thrush and Eastern Bluebird - the latter was an indication of this
species southward migration. The boardwalk at the end of Haul Road is
complete and offers observers a fine view of the Potomac and nearby islands.
On Friday morning (11/18), I took a quick walk down Haul Road and
encountered an immature Northern Goshawk. There were 2 Gray Catbirds along
the trail, too. Five Great Egrets huddled from the breeze in the channel
between the islands.
