VA BIRDers,
Please let me extend special thanks to Larry for leading today's Sunday Dyke
Marsh Field Trip. And let me augment Larry's valuable list with sightings
from yesterday and today, Oct 15 & 16.
Oct 15: I visited the Stone Bridge over Hunting Creek near sunset and add
the following:
Wood Duck 2
Great Blue Heron 2
Great Egret 43 - posting up just after sunset on the wooden pilings near
Port O'Vecchio - fun to watch
Little Blue Heron 1 - an amazingly late species for our area, sat down with
the rest of the Great Egrets. Fine scope views.
Bald Eagle 1, adult
Laughing Gull 2000 or more, its great watching these animals fly into the
river to roost for the night
Ring-billed Gull 200+ sorry Sherman, did not really pay attention to these
Herring Gull 10
Great Black-backed Gull 2
Caspian Tern 2
Forster's Tern 8
Chimney Swift 200 - all swarming over the forest at sunset, then moving
north towards the city. Why? That's where the chimneys are located!
Belted Kingfisher 1
Savannah Sparrow 1, crossing the creek southbound
Oct 16: I visited the Stone Bridge late afternoon and then scoped Hunting
Creek Bay. Additions are:
Green-winged Teal 2
Ruddy Duck 7
Killdeer 9
Caspian Tern 6
Forster's Tern 18
Palm Warbler 1
