Birders who participated in this morning's walk at Belle Haven/Dyke
Marsh enjoyed watching Tree Swallows swirling and swooping over the
Potomac River and Ospreys bringing in large sticks to refurbish their
nest in the snag off the picnic area. Three Horned Grebes in
transitional plumage, a Pine Warbler, an Eastern Towhee, and an Eastern
Phoebe were other signs of early spring. It came as a surprise to
many of us that not only birds occupy bird nests. Jon Little spotted a
raccoon taking a snooze high in a tree in what was probably an old
crow's nest.
