I birded the stretch of road along the Dulles Wetlands early this morning for a
couple hours. I couldn't see much in the water except Mallards and Wood Ducks,
as well as a lone Great Blue Heron, 2 Green Herons, Lesser Yellowlegs,
Kingfisher, and Rough-Winged Swallows. Along the road the birds were
plentiful. The Blue Grosbeak pair are back in the same location, and were
making mating moves. I also found two Willow Flycatchers in place. Also
heard/seen were Yellow-Billed Cuckoo, Red- and White-Eyed Vireo, Brown
Thrasher, Bluebird, Yellow Warbler, Prairie Warbler, Yellowthroat, and Orchard
Oriole. Less bucolic was the sound of pounding construction equipment in the
distance, continuing the clearing for the development between the Wetlands and
nearby Banshee Reeks Nature Preserve. It made my blood run cold.
