I got up this morning before daybreak to look for night birds south of
Suffolk. I found 2 Chuck-will's-widows and 1 Whip-poor-will. When it was
light, I visited Jericho Ditch of the Dismal Swamp. I hoped for unusual
migrants, but wasn't able to find any. I did hear a probable Rose-breasted
Grosbeak, but the bird flew away before I could sight it. It seemed that
Yellow-billed Cuckoos were singing everywhere (at least 7 birds). I saw a
Swainson's Warbler briefly along Jericho, south of the parking lot. What a
cute bird with a beautiful voice. I don't think I could get tired of seeing
them.
A Northern Bobwhite flushed from the path at one point. Green Herons easily
seen at sunrise, Wood Ducks flying, and a Summer Tanager singing were other
highlights for me.
I was going to visit Washington Ditch to look for Yellow-breasted Chats and
other warblers, but I was very tired.
My list of warblers included:
Northern Parula
Black-throated Blue Warbler (1, heard only)
Yellow-rumped Warbler
Prairie Warbler
Blackpoll Warbler
Black-and-white Warbler
Prothonotary Warbler
Worm-eating Warbler
Swainson's Warbler
Ovenbird
Louisiana Waterthrush
Common Yellowthroat
Hooded Warbler
Elisa Enders
