I got up at 0430 this morning to look for Chuck-will's-widows and
Whip-poor-wills. I heard one Chuck along White Marsh Road (Route 642) about
1 mile south of the Jericho Ditch entrance to Dismal Swamp. I heard two
Whips along Hosier Road (Route 604) near a young patch of pines, about 5 or
6 miles south of Suffolk. It started getting light at 0545, with good light
at 0615. I birded a little at Railroad Ditch, Washington Ditch, and the
Dismal Swamp refuge office. I had to quit birding at 0900. New species for
me this year were Acadian Flycatcher (1 heard at refuge office),
Yellow-throated Warbler (Washington and Railroad Ditches), Yellow-billed
Cuckoo (1 heard at Washington Ditch parking area), and Bobwhite (wonderful
looks at a pair on the entrance road to Washington Ditch).
The list of warblers (13 species) included:
Yellow-rumped Warbler
Yellow-throated Warbler
Pine Warbler
Prairie Warbler
Black and White Warbler
American Redstart (heard at swamp crossings, not at Dismal Swamp refuge)
Prothonotary Warbler
Worm-eating Warbler (1 heard at Railroad Ditch)
Swainson's Warbler (1 heard at Railroad Ditch)
Ovenbird
Louisiana Waterthrush
Common Yellowthroat
Hooded Warbler
I also looked for Yellow-breasted Chat, but had no luck.
