I visited the both the Washington and Jericho ditch entrances to Dismal
Swamp NWR this morning. Also, some time was spent looking for the
SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER that had been reported from this past Tuesday. I
failed to find this bird.
The biting flies are plentiful at Washington ditch, but are also present, in
lesser numbers, at Jericho ditch.
Some of the species included:
Great Blue Heron
Green Heron
Pileated Woodpecker (a nice family at Washington Ditch)
Yellow-billed Cuckoo
Eastern Kingbird
Eastern Wood-Pewee
Acadian Flycatcher
Northern Mockingbird
Eastern Bluebird
Red-eyed Vireo
White-eyed Vireo
Prothonotary Warbler
Prairie Warbler
Common Yellowthroat
Ovenbird
Indigo Bunting
Blue Grosbeak
I also visited Hog Island WMA in Surry County this morning and drove around
north Suffolk looking for marshes that may hold BLACK RAILS. There were no
shorebirds at Hog Island, but many GREAT BLUE HERONS, CANADA GEESE, and one
GREAT EGRET.
I would like to know when and where the most recent records of BLACK RAIL
have been in Hampton Roads. Most of the marshes I have seen look too wet,
are surrounded by developments, or cannot be reached without a boat.
It was a nice day, but a little hot.
