I stopped by Craney Island in Portsmouth yesterday, but did not see any of
the phalaropes. I did see 2 Black Skimmers flying by the west side.
This morning, I stopped briefly at the Jericho Ditch section of Dismal
Swamp. I was amazed that I could not hear any Swainson's or Worm-eating
Warblers. I heard very few birds. Prothonotary, C. Yellowthroat, Prairie,
Hooded, and Louisiana Waterthrush were the warbler species I encountered. I
also saw a Black Bear walking towards me near the parking area. That made
me nervous, but the bear turned off into the woods at about 150 feet from
me.
