Hi,
My string of great weather days for my Thursday walks in the swamp came
to a soggy end today. I went there anyway since the last forcast I
heard said the rain would be ending early. However, that was not the
reality I encountered. I tried somewhat heroically for about an hour
with very few useful results. I was, however, serenaded by a
very-close-to-the-entrance-road Swainson's Warbler. Had the weather
cooperated a little more, I'm sure I would have seen it. The bird was
about two-thirds of the way to the parking lot on Jericho Ditch Lane.
There is a fallen tree on the left as you enter that currently has a
couple of orange markers on it. The bird was calling near that tree.
This location is very close to that of a singing Swainson's Warbler
which put on good shows for people last spring. Remember that playback
tapes are not allowed in the refuge.
Next week I will be away at a conference, so my next Dismal Swamp
report
will be in two weeks, hopefully back on the better weather track.
Perhaps one of you would like to fill in for me next week and post a report.
Cheers,
Bob Ake
