I found an immature male dickcissel at Occoquan NWR this morning (10/9). It
was along the Taylor Point trail, just before it joins up with the wildlife
drive as you are walking from the parking lot to the point. The bird was
perched in a small bare tree with a song sparrow and several Savannah sparrows,
so I got some great scope views. It had me stumped for while, but I finally
figured it out. Also in the immediate vicinity were 2 bobolinks and 2
Lincoln's sparrows. Other birds in along the Taylor Point trail were Vesper
sparrow (1), swamp sparrow, field sparrow, both kinglets, indigo bunting, palm
warbler, yellow-rumped warbler, phoebe, bluebird, chimney swift (lots), and
pileated woodpecker. It was a great morning to be out.
