This afternoon, I had a male Dickcissel singing from a wire on the northeast
side of Alanthus Road (Rt. 663) approximately 1.5 miles northwest of Rt. 29
northeast of Culpeper in Culpeper County. The bird was just northwest of Twin
Pines Farm (13233 Alanthus Drive). Numerous Grasshopper Sparrows and several
Bobolinks were in, and on posts and wires around, the relatively tall hayfields
here.
Lots of migrant passerines around today. Single Mourning and Tennessee
warblers were singing along the railroad tracks near the Exxon station on
Business 15/29 just west of Rt. 29 near Culpeper, and flocks in our yard
included 7 Scarlet Tanagers, 3 Baltimore Orioles, 2 Rose-breasted Grosbeaks, 15
Red-eyed Vireos, 2 Northern Parulas, 2 American Redstarts, and 2 Bay-breasted,
7 Black-throated Green, and 2 Magnolia warblers.
