Hi All
I set off to find the elusive (for me) Red-headed Woodpecker. Sky
Meadows had almost nothing so I tried Rte. 710 across Rte. 17. 2
Flickers, 2 Pilleated, 4 Red-bellied, 1 Hairy in short order, then as I
came around a corner there was my Red-headed on a tree 20 feet away. It
stayed there about 4 minutes giving me lots of good looks, and flew off.
Maybe even better, awhile later I checked out a possible Mockingbird and
it turned out to be a Loggerhead Shrike! I knew what it was right away
with the binocs but it stayed around long enough for me to get it in the
scope for a great look.
There was also a hawk out there that I saw twice whose undersides were
almost entirely white. Just two small brown marks on the leading edge of
the wings, much smaller and less solid than a Rough-legged's patches. I
just glimpsed brown upper wings. I know how unlikely it is but what I
saw matched up best with Sibley's light juvenile Ferruginous Hawk.
Hopefully someone with more experience will get a look at it.
This is a very enjoyable birding road. Only two cars passed me from
2-4:30. Thanks to Todd for mentioning it awhile back.
Cheers,
John Fox
