I laugh at 78 species. Bart and I walked the back side of Huntley, and I've
never seen fewer birds (numbers or diversity) - at least until the last few
minutes. For the first almost 2 hours, we saw or heard a grand total of 22
species (with not a single chickadee, titmouse, nuthatch, downy, and no
warbler other than yellowthroat). Finally, on our way out, we came across a
big mixed foraging flock, including at least 9 species of warbler, a
ruby-crowned kinglet, and a tanager. Even so, we ended the morning with a
total of 38 species, about the fewest I've ever seen. Noteworthy species:
Great egret 1
Greater yellowlegs 1
Swift 3
Flicker 7
Acadian 1 (still singing)
Wood thrush 1
Catbird 3
RC kinglet 2
Nashville warbler 1
Parula 2
Chestnut-sided 1
Magnolia 2
BTB 1 (female)
BTG 1
Blackburnian 1
Pine 1
B&W 2
Redstart 7 (1 adult male)
Yellowthroat 6
Towhee 1
Scarlet tanager 1
Blue grosbeak (singing weakly in the back corner of the Woodcock Meadow)
I had another Acadian at White Oaks Park this morning. This is a week past
my previous late date.
