Sometimes, the early bird does get the worm--or the hummingbird, in this
case! Jim Felley of the Smithsonian reports that the hummingbird was
active on the Salvia this morning at 6:45. I staked my own claim in the
Ripley Garden starting around 7:45. At 8:25, the hummingbird appeared on
the middle Salvia. I was fortunate: it did not seem at all bothered by my
binoculars and camera. I finished one roll of film (about 5 shots) and
took 16 pictures on another roll. I may look for it again around
lunchtime; I will definitely finish my second roll and get both developed
today. Hopefully, I can have any decent photos scanned and posted on the
web tonight; I will announce the link once they are up.
As for my own observations this morning, I also noticed more tail
flicking/flaring than I am accustomed to seeing. It was quite thorough in
its use of the Salvia; it then flew right and sat briefly in the bare
branches of the silverbell tree. From here, it went to the clump of Salvia
on the far right corner, and after relieving this plant of its nectar load,
zipped right past the Arts & Industries building in the direction of the
Mall (I couldn't see if it turned the corner or went straight).
I'm really not a morning person, but in this case, it was worth it!
