I stopped by Craney Island this afternoon from 1300 to 1500.  I tried to
check all the impoundments, but may have missed a few good spots.  The best
spot was the west end of the south impoundment.  This held most of the duck
species and the sandbar on the western edge of Craney had the terns, gulls,
and herons.  I saw a large Snapping Turtle crossing the paved road that
connects the office to the formerly used Hedgerow Lane entrance.  The turtle
was about 2 feet long.  It was neat to see a few cormorants in breeding
plumage, and I was very happy to see the terns back.  I saw one of the folks
from the Dismal Swamp walk -- I hope he saw the Avocets and Gull-billed
Terns.  A species list follows.  It is nice to have access to Craney again.
