I stopped by Craney Island in Portsmouth this afternoon for about 1 hour.
There were a few Least Sandpipers and Greater Yellowlegs about. I saw 3
Whimbrel flyby as I was at the northwest corner of Craney. The impoundments
are rather full of water (except for the middle impoundment, which is full
of vegetation), so shorebirds are sticking to the waterline.
The most interesting event was an adult Gull-billed Tern circling, calling,
and performing shallow dives at me. A young Gull-billed Tern flew overhead
briefly, but did not perform any similar actions. This was while I was on
the western grassy slope of the southern impoundment. I decided to return
to my car, so I would not continue to upset the tern. Anyway, I don't want
my skull to be injured.
