I finally made it over to Craney Island today to see the EARED GREBE.
As advertised, the bird was found in the western portion of the middle
impoundment and provided good looks. I didn't see the Red Phalarope
that was reported on Sunday. However, I did get close looks at a pair
of WILSON'S PHALAROPES. Seems awfully late for them. They were located
at the west end of the southernmost impoundment. Other highlights
included 5 AMERICAN AVOCETS in the middle impoundment, an adult male
NORTHERN HARRIER working the edges and a VESPER SPARROW near the
northwest end. It was difficult to search the grasslands for sparrows
today because the mosquitos were out in full force and I didn't have any
insect repellent. Good birding.
