VA Birders,
The immature Cooper's that has been hanging around the yard for the past few
months made several visits again today. It comes in fast, and the birds
scatter, but it seldom gives chase. It usually sits on a branch for awhile,
then drops down to the ground in an attempt to flush birds from under the
shrubs. When the birds do flush it usually doesn't go after them.
At one point today the hawk was sitting on a tree branch near the edge of the
yard, and a Gray Squirrel passed directly under it. The squirrel was about 15
feet below the hawk and was in the open. The squirrel stopped for a moment.
They both looked at each other, then the squirrel continued on his way, and the
hawk never moved.
Here is a link to a photo I took of the hawk.
