VA Birders,
Yesterday an immature Cooper's Hawk came in to the yard to check out the
warblers near our small stream. It first perched in the cherry tree about 4
feet above the stream, which forced the bathing warblers to dive into the
nearby azalea bush. The hawk sat and looked over the area for awhile. Since the
birds wouldn't come out, it decided to go in after them. It dropped down and
went under the bush. I could see the movement of the smaller birds moving to
safer positions. After a couple of minutes without any luck the hawk came out
into the stream. It then flew up to the top of the waterfall just next to the
bush. After staying there for a few more minutes it dropped down and went back
under the bush again. As it came out the other side one small bird made a break
for it. The hawk started to give chase, but evidently decided that his prey had
too much of a lead. It then flew into a locust tree near the edge of the woods
and sat awhile before flying deeper into the woods
without dinner.
