Subject: [va-bird] Continuing Shorebird Use; Rt 50 Turf Pond
Nearly every afternoon on my commute home, I pull off onto the shoulder
of Rt 50 in southeastern Loudoun County, about a quarter to a half mile
west of the Rt 50/Rt 606 intersection and look at the visitors to the
large puddle in a turf grass field on the north side (from the west
bound lane) of Rt 50.
Three weeks ago, up to 5 killdeer, a pectoral and up to 9 peeps were
there for about a week.
Yesterday, three lesser yellowlegs and what I assume were 5 pectoral
sandpipers were busy feeding in the shallow water and flooded turf
grasses. My shorebird ID skills are rusty; among the "pectorals" may
have been one or more other species.
If you have time or are driving that way, pull well off the road and
take a look. It's become one of the best parts of my commute home.
