While this is not about birds in Virginia, many Virginia birders work
in
DC, so I think it useful to point out good birding spots downtown. I
walked through Constitution Gardens and the nearby War Memorial this
morning on the way to a meeting and found some nice migrants and new
arrivals. Over the pond at CG were 4 swallow species (bank, barn,
tree,
and rough wing) and chimney swift. Flying overhead were a kestrel,
osprey, and green heron. Around the War Memorial I found
yellow-rumped
(lots), yellow and prairie warblers, hermit thrush, kingbird,
baltimore
oriole, ruby crowned kinglet, house wren, chipping sparrow, and other
common residents. Over the years I have had many great mornings in
this
area.
