Apologies in advance for the completely non-bird related message.
I came across a somewhat startling tidbit of information today, regarding
oceans. Was I the last person to know that as of the spring of 2000, the
International Hydrographic Organization decided that there was a fifth ocean
on the planet? Cleverly enough, they're calling it the Southern Ocean. It
extends from the coast of Antarctica north to 60 degrees south latitude. I
can read between the lines here and see that it was seemingly a political
decision, but, did this make news? Did I completely miss it? I do my part,
I listen to NPR, but somehow this slipped past me. Was there a vote? Did
anyone get to lobby against this? Is it actually recognized by everyone?
The website I'm forwarding makes me think that maybe the United States
recognizes it. Now, it is only a smallish ocean, with just the Arctic Ocean
being smaller, but it is still twice the size of the United States.
