VA Birders,
Jane Grawe and I went birding at Fort C.F. Smith Park, Arlington Co.,
this morning, Friday, March 3. We arrived a little before 10:00 am, and we saw
6
BLACK VULTURES just after we arrived. We saw an adult RED-SHOULDERED HAWK,
but most of the other birds we saw in the park before Jane had to leave seemed
to be AM. ROBINS & EUROPEAN STARLINGS (about 100 of each).
I decided to stay a little longer, and about noon, just as I was about to
leave, Sue Heath arrived at the park. Fortunately, I stayed and birded with
her for another hour or more. Soon we found a YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER and 2
FOX SPARROWS in the area between the Hendry (main) House and the rock garden.
Then, while we were checking out other birds in that area, we both heard and
then saw a COMMON RAVEN. The raven flew by at close range and both of us had
excellent views of its wedge-shaped tail. This is the first raven I have ever
seen in Arlington, and quite possibly it is the first one to be recorded in
the county.
Good birding,
Val Kitchens
