I spent two plus hours searching the Occoquan Regional Park for the
Brown-headed Nuthatch from 1100 to 1330 today. I walked down the road to the
kiln and
the visitor center and returned to Ox Rd. on the ridge trail above the river.
I searched through a lot of good pine habitat, but failed to spot the
nuthatch.
However when I arrived near the kiln I heard a Common Raven coming from the
direction of the Landfill. It cleared the trees right over my head not more
than 30 yards high vocalizing repeatedly. I've seen a lot of ravens out west
and in the mountains on the GW National Forest here in Virginia, but this is
the
first one I've seen in the Piedmont.
