Virginia birders,
Last night, Thursday 25 August, the Monticello Bird Club sponsored a
nighthawk migration watch at the Ivy Creek Natural Area in
Charlottesville.
We saw a total of 36 COMMON NIGHTHAWKS during our watch, between 06:30
and 08:15 p.m. The largest group included 11 Common Nighthawks moving in
a straight line to the south. Most of the birds were relatively high,
but several passed overhead at fairly close range.
The weather was excellent, with pleasant temperatures, relatively low
humidity, a slight wind, and few bugs. A colorful summer sunset and a
few wispy cirrus clouds provided a good viewing stage. My spouse, Laura
Long, counted 31 persons attending our nighthawk watch, including
families with young children. It was a nice bunch of people.
An easy-to-hear EASTERN SCREECH-OWL was an unexpected and welcome extra.
The owl called repeatedly from the nearby woods, beginning at approx
08:05 p.m., and was still going strong when we departed at 08:15 p.m.
A most enjoyable evening.
