The late winter/spring hawkwatch at College Creek, on the James River, near
Williamsburg, sponsored by Coastal VA Wildlife Observatory, is off to a
modest start.
We managed 7 short watches in February and found 47 birds crossing the river,
including both vultures, Bald Eagle, Osprey, Cooper's and Sharp-shinned,
Red-shouldered and Red-tailed hawks.
A few Tree Swallows are just beginning to show up and Fish Crows should be
arriving at the site soon. Brown Pelicans have become regular. Recently,
several Tundra Swans and hundreds of Red-breasted Mergansers have been on the
river.
