Mike Boatwright and I took a ride down to the coast today to hopefully
see some of the good birds that have been around. We were not
disappointed. Our first stop was Virginia Beach where we were treated
to awesome views of the WESTERN TANAGER. Also hanging around the yard
were up to 20 PINE SISKINS. Many thanks to the gracious home owners,
Nylia and Steve Proescher, for allowing access to these birds.
The next stop was the CBBT where the highlight was the 3 RED-NECKED
GREBES that were hanging off of Island #1 near the rocky jetty.
We moved on to the Eastern Shore and saw the previously reported drake
EURASIAN WIGEON in the marsh pond at the ESVNWR. Also there, among the
other waterfowl, was a pair of BLUE-WINGED TEAL. Over at the west end
of Kiptopeke State Park, we had great close up views of fishing
RED-THROATED LOONS. Mike also flushed up 6 NORTHERN BOBWHITE in the
field adjacent to the parking lot.
Our last stop was Lambert Trail in Chesapeake where the PAINTED BUNTING
made a stop at the feeder at 4:00. What a great day at the coast. Good
birding.
