VA Birders,
After the NVBC trip to the Luckett's area in Loudon County this morning, I
headed west on Rt. 7 to look for the Cliff Swallows that Ian Topolsky posted on
April 16. Thank you Ian for that post.
I was not disappointed. I spent about 30 minutes watching many Cliff Swallows
flying in and out of nests, up and down and around the river. It took me
awhile to get a good look at them. At first, they all appeared to be under the
bridge on the west side of the river from where I parked and I was sorry that I
did not have my scope with me, but as I watched, I saw more and more birds
entering and leaving nests closer to where I was standing.
My best views of the bird actually came when I was going back to my car to
leave. Suddenly, there were 10 or 12 swallows flying in and out of nests under
the part of the bridge that is over land looking east. The light was much
better looking east (I was there about 4:30 pm).
Two life birds (the other being a Grasshopper Sparrow in the Luckett's area)
made a beautiful spring day extra special.
