Hello all
This afternoon around 2pm I met up with Jean & Charlie Brodwater so we could
go to a couple of barn sites in the Stuarts Draft area to count Cliff Swallow
nests . At the first site we still had some active nests with a total of 74
"jars'' & at the second site a total of 8 active '' jars '' . Now at the first
site I found a broken nest on the ground which had become dislodged from the
barn & on the ground was a dead Cliff swallow chick with pen feathers , plus
many fragments of other broken nests . We counted a total of 95 places where
nests had been . We do not know if some were last years or they are totally
this years nest which have fallen . At the second site we counted 20 nests that
were broken or have fallen . Also at the first site I found one Barn Swallow
nest with 4 chicks that looked only a few days old .
After leaving Jean & Charlie I decided to check out a couple of places . The
first place was Quillins Pond where I saw 3 Great Blue Heron --- one adult
with 2 Imm. The second place was the Dupont Pond . There I was looking for
Black -- crowned Night Heron in which I found one but the surprise bird was a
Common Loon which looked like it was a first year bird or an adult in molt . I
only had binoculars & the lighting was some what bad where the bird was . Not a
bad afternoon for bird watching . Happy summer birding to all . Allen Larner
