Birders,
I'm thrilled to report a spectacular male Rose-breasted Grosbeak at my suet
feeder this morning in Vienna. Earlier, I took a walk along the W&OD bike path,
at Clark's Crossing in Vienna. A White-eyed Vireo greeted me as I stepped out
of the car. A welcoming committee of Chipping Sparrows was assembled on the
trail. Birds were out in the open, very visible, many sunning themselves and
preening after a soggy night.The Eastern Kingbird pair was working on their
penthouse at the top of the same electrical tower where they have nested for
the last three years. Brown Thrashers were gurgling and singing with gusto. In
my short hour walk, I saw the following:
Turkey Vulture 7
Canada Goose 2
Wood Duck 1 (it has been a while since I have seen them at Clark's Crossing)
Mallard 1
Cooper's Hawk 2 (2 sightings, probably the same bird)
Red-shouldered Hawk 2
Belted Kingfisher 1
Pileated Woodpecker 1
Eastern Phoebe 1
Eastern Kingbird 3
White-eyed Vireo 5
Crow, sp. 4
Blue Jay 21 (flying over)
Tree Swallow 3
Carolina Wren 1
Blue-Gray Gnatcatcher 10
Eastern Bluebird 4
Gray Catbird 8
Brown Thrasher 4
Northern Parula 2
Prairie Warbler 2
Common Yellowthroat 8 (at least, they were all along the path)
Eastern Towhee 3
Chipping Sparrow 5
Savannah Sparrow 1
