I left the house without much hope this morning, giving the low gray skies, but
was I ever wrong. When I got to Cockpit Pt. Rd. at about 7am the trees were
full of warblers. The vast majority were yellow-rumps. Between Cockpit Pt.
Rd. and Leesylvania State Park (my other stop), I must have seen over 100 of
them. The other bird seen in big numbers was ruby-crowned kinglet. They were
also everywhere.
One of the non-butterbutts was a singing cerulean along Cockpit Pt. Rd. I had
13 warbler species in all, including pine, palm, northern parula, black and
white, worm-eating, prairie, yellow, prothonotary (Leesylvania), yellow
throated, ovenbird, and yellowthroat. I saw both tanagers (summer and scarlet)
at Leesylvania, orchard oriole, great-crested flycatcher, eastern kingbird,
indigo bunting, ruby-throated hummer, blue-headed vireo, Cooper's hawk, lesser
yellowlegs, and spotted sandpiper.
All in all a fun morning, with 80 species seen in 4 hours.
