I just made a trip from Madison (where I live) down to Charlottesville,
Virginia. I traveled the back roads and visited some places I thought might
have an influx of bird activity.
On Bairs Lane Road, off Rt 231, headed south from Old Pratts, I saw a total of
26 Blue Jays. Just thought I'd mention this because I have never seen that
quantity in one tree before.
On Rt 22 just before Rt 860 in a small pond I counted 6 Hooded Mergansers.
On Rt 22 at a farm I rented when I first moved to Virginia, about 2 miles past
the Keswick Post Office headed toward Gordonsville, there were at least 30+
Cedar Waxwings, 30+ European Starlings, 25+ American Robins, 12+ Yellow-Rumped
Warblers, 2 Tufted Titmouse, and 3 Black-Capped Chickadees.
At the intersection of Rt 20 and Rt 53 (just as you turn onto Rt 53), I counted
22 Cedar Waxwings.
At Piedmont Virginia Community College I saw 80+ Cedar Waxwings.
On the hill at Sam's Club, I counted at least 27 Cedar Waxwings. I checked
this area again becauseI had seen some yesterday afternoon, but didn't have my
scope.
I was hoping one of the Bohemian's might be in one of these flocks, since they
were lucky just north of us in Maryland, but no such luck.
