If you are seeking the Red-necked Phalaropes at Blandy Experimental Farm,
Clarke Co., there are are two Cattle egrets nearby - this is a decent bird
for our local area birders - one way to get there: go 3 mi south of
Dinosaurland (junction of RT 277, Rt 522 and Rt340) on Rt 522 - turn left
(east) on Rt 639 (Refuge Church Road) and go approx. 3 mi. - go over a big
humped railroad crossing and watch for the pond (+/- .25 mi) on the left
(north) side of the road - driving the surrounding area you should also see
Savannah Sparrow, Bobolink, Grasshopper Sparrow, Red-headed Woodpecker and in
the past has been a good place for Dickcissel - there are lots of just right
fields for the grassland birds right now - for record keeping we also saw and
heard the 2 Sandhill Cranes (Bob Ake's report) at Back Bay (near the
maintenance area in the NWR and flying over n. over Little Island VA Beach
Recreation Area) sporadically between May 2 to 11 - also for the record we
had an Iceland Gull May 8, 2003 at the Little Island Pier , VA Beach - Rob
