VA BIRDers,
I observed two Caspian Terns on the Hunting Creek mudflats today in the late
afternoon.
The tide was starting to come in, overflowing the riverside flats at about 6
pm. There were many large larids for this location today. A census of the
birds I spotted were:
Double-crested Cormorant 17
Great Blue Heron 3
Great Egret 2
Tundra Swan 1
Mallard 12
Green-winged Teal 89
Lesser Scaup 20
Bufflehead 1
Common Merganser 3
Osprey 5 (2 pairs on nest, another suitor or passerby?)
Bald Eagle 1
Killdeer 5 (west side flats)
Common Snipe 1 (west side flats)
Boneparte's Gull 40
Ring-billed Gull 260
Herring Gull 60
Lesser Black-backed Gull 3 - 1 ad, 2 first winter/summer
Great Black-backed Gull 53
Caspian Tern 2
crow sp. ca. 60 (most were American in calls or wing shape)
Tree Swallow 5
Yellow-rumped Warbler 2
E. Towhee 1
