VA Birders, Saturday morning, March 24, I had planned to join the Northern
Virginia Bird Club walk at Huntley Meadows Park, but when it started raining
as I got in my car, I decided to go back to bed instead! Later that morning,
when I looked out in my back yard, I spotted my first CHIPPING SPARROW of
theyear at one of my feeders. Then about mid-day, I drove down to Roaches
Run, also in Arlington Co., in hopes of finding my first swallows of the
year. As soon as I arrived at the big pond, I saw 4 swallows. They stayed on
the far side of the pond, but I finally got some decent looks at them and
realized they were NORTHERN ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOWS. Then, to my surprise, a
CASPIAN TERN flew over. About the same time I saw that it had a fish, an
immature RING-BILLED GULL started chasing it. The fish soon disappeared, and
I'm hoping the tern swallowed it, since I didn't see it drop. Val Kitchens
