I'm jumping in a bit late to say that *my* Carolina wrens are also
big-time (commercial) suet cake customers. They seem to prefer the
peanut butter variety, but will eat the berry type in a pinch. The
downy woodpeckers are the most frequent suet cake takers, but the wrens
are probably the runner up as far as frequency goes. We also back to
wooded parkland, with a stream just downhill.
Our cakes are presented in an upside-down, cage-type feeder with a
hinged metal top. The woodpeckers hang underneath to feed, and the
wrens and other birds pop inside. We've also had mockingbirds and even
a hermit thrush taking their turns (in a rather acrobatic fashion).
