A quick morning walk around 4 blocks in Cape Charles revealed a number of
migrant passerines, including Chestnut-sided Warbler (1), Summer Tanager (1),
American Redstart (2), Yellow Warbler (2), Ovenbird (1), Red-eyed Vireo (3),
Magnolia Warbler (1), Common Yellowthroat (10), Gray Catbird (15, 1 dead),
Northern Parula (1), and Blackpoll (2). Some of these have been around for a
few days, but most are new arrivals this morning. On the beach, 9 Purple
Sandpipers were on the jetty at the "fun pier," along with 2 Common, 12
Forster's, and 4 Royal Terns, 15 Ruddy Turnstones, 20 Dunlin, and 18
Sanderling. A few Common Loons, Northern Gannets, and Red-breasted
Mergansers were still out on the Bay. Local nesters included 40 Purple
Martins, 3 Orchard Orioles, 16 Northern Rough-winged, 10 Barn, 20+ Tree
Swallows, and scads of Chimney Swifts.
