HEADQUARTERS (THIS IS A CHANGE): An improvement on the Peacock Motor Inn
(not hard to do): KIPTOPEKE INN (formerly Day's Inn; 757-331-1000) on the
W. side of Rt. 13, it is 6.3 miles s. of the light that is at the turn off
of Rt. 13 to the town of Cape Charles and 0.3 mi. N of the entrance to
Kiptopeke State Park (Rt. 704) on the W side of Route 13. $49, do not
accept AARP or AAA. Just S of the aforementioned light is a Food Lion and
McDonald's. I will arrive at Kiptopeke Inn at c. 8 P.M., Dec. 29, and will
be ensconced in splendor. Party assignments, maps, Jim Beam and their/its
ilk will be dispensed on count eve. I will not know the room number until
I get there.
ALTERNATIVE LODGING. Kiptopeke Inn is 2.5 mi. N of Best Western/Sunset
Beach Resort ($65, do accept AARP/AAA, www.bwsunsetbeachresort.com,
757-331-1776, 1-800-899-4SUN). Kiptopeke Inn is 6.3 mi. S of Rittenhouse
Motor Lodge (W side of Rt. 13, 757-331-2768, $65, does not acept AARP/AAA,
if you stay ask for the "new" rooms, which are in back and bigger,
www.rittenhousemotorlodge.com, Lodgeon13@xxxxxxxxx). Lovely plantings,
azaleas, camellias & big Loblolly Pines.
GAS: Across Rt. 13 from Kiptopeke Inn is a Chevron station, often the
cheapeast one in the area. There's a Citco station on the W. side of Rt.
13 between Kiptopeke Inn and the Kiptopeke State Park entrance.
The Peacock Motor Inn and Cape Motel are closed. The Edgewood Motel is
probably not satisfactory for most of us.
EATING & COMPILATION: Breakfast is at 6 A.M. and dinner at 5:30 P.M. at
the Cape Center/Sting-Ray's on Route 13 on the east side and 2.1 mi. N. of
Kiptopeke Inn. Bring your own lunch. Thanks to Sam Sweeney of Kiptopeke
State Park the compilation will be at Kiptopeke State Park Headquarters (n.
side Route 704) in the conference room AT 7:00 P.M. SHARP.
AMPHIBIOUS FORCES: The boat fee is still $20 per head but, as it has been
for years, is largely subsidized by myself. Boat reservations are on a
first come/first call basis. Dress warmly and dryly. Rubber knee (or
higher) boots are required and rain suits are desirable if it is windy. We
have NEVER been weathered out. The boat leaves from the Intracoastal
Waterway (Ramp Lane off the south end of Hallett Circle), locally known as
the Federal Cut, below Eastern Shore of Virginia N.W.R. The boat party,
captained by Albert Heath, spends most of the day walking the barrier
islands and sees large numbers of waterfowl, shorebirds, and marsh species
plus raptors.
IMPORTANT: Please check on your party assignments at the motel on count
eve even if you get there late or else phone me at the Peacock the night
before. Do NOT wait until breakfast. BE EXTRA CONSIDERATE OF LANDOWNERS:
ALWAYS KNOCK AND ASK PERMISSION. All count participants must, alas, pay
the $5 participation fee to subsidize processing & posting of the Christmas
counts. Everyone on my mailing list will receive an annotated copy of the
Cape Charles results. I will be participating in the asterisked (*) counts
and, after Christmas, will have several gung ho passengers. We TRY to take
no prisoners.
