Weather:
Count began after fog had lifted appreciably; sun started to become
consistent by 10:00 EST, and there was at least 55% cloud cover almost all
day, although sun for much of it. Wind was light NW in the morning, then
NNE in the afternoon, 2-5 mph, and a high of 81.
Observations:
Kept waiting for the Broadwings reported to the north to flow, and several
kettles of about 10 each finally came from 4-5 PM, along with an adult
Mississippi Kite, the first for our site since beginning in 1997. Osprey
provided interest the rest of the day, in numbers unusual for our site,
not unexpected given recent reports.
Hummers (6), R. H. Woodpecker (1), Common Nighthawks (a tight group of 18
cruised through at 1:07), Monarchs (33), Dragonflies (20).
Candler Mountain is located on the southeast edge of Lynchburg, VA, in
Virginia's Inner Piedmont. It is 45 miles SSE of Rockfish Gap and 32
miles E of Harvey's Knob. The bare knob offers a 360 degree view from
an elevation of 1336 feet, and is part of a minor ridge that parallels
the Blue Ridge Parkway, 16 miles to the NW. The Candler Mountain Hawk
Watch is in its sixth year, and is sponsored by the Liberty University
Department of Biology and the Lynchburg Bird Club. The count is
currently conducted only from mid September to the end of the month
because of a shortage of counters.
