Site Coordinator: Gene Sattler
Observers: Gene Sattler
Weather:
Overcast to 60% by mid afternoon, and 15% by count's end. Wind variable,
but predominantly S-SW 0-5 mph. Temperature 66-75 degrees F.
Observations:
A pleasant surprise! Broadwings flowed steadily from 11:00-13:00 EST, with
larger kettles of 55-140, and one extended stream of 315. Then a lull for
a couple of hours before a last kettle of 158 at 15:30 EST. Birds were up
near the limit of naked eye vision, but the primary flight path was not
far off of the ridge to the SE, and occasionally over the ridge, so easier
to pick up on than yesterday. Diversity of other raptors was down, both
because we don't get the diversity found on the ridges, and because they
get lost in the shuffle somewhat when I'm alone and struggling to keep up
detecting and counting significant numbers of BW. Did finally got a
Merlin, although a few good candidates have gone through this month that I
did not get good enough looks at. Maybe a Peregrine tomorrow.
D.C. Cormorant (1 soaring, trying to look like an Anhinga), Blue Jays (59),
R.C. Kinglet (1), Palm Warbler (1 western race), R.B. Grosbeak (1), D.E.
Junco (1), Monarchs (87), Dragonflies (44).
Predictions:
I predict that due to today's numbers I will be out another day or two at
the lookout to see what comes through, even though I normally don't run
the count beyond September for lack of time.
