I recently had an encounter with a Barred Owl who gave me a call I have never
heard. The closest noise to this owl's call is a police siren. I only knew it
was the Barred, as I was in it's territory and after the siren shriek, I got
the classic Barred call. Obviously, owls have a wide range of possible
vocalizations. Keep on monitoring those sounds and check out this web page.

any of them match your observations.

After listening to all of the different calls for the owls, I can pretty
well say that my "mystery call" isn't an owl. The closest I've been able
to come up with is one of the Night-Herons, though it's not quite
right. Every call I've heard for them has them calling in a fairly steady
pattern---call..wait...call...wait, for numerous calls. This is calling in
a set of 3 calls with a long wait, and then 3 calls, but the sound of the
call is a pretty good match for what I've been hearing. Obviously, they
really shouldn't be here now, and I'll be curious to see if I hear this
call again after the front that just went through.
