Hi
After listening to all of the different calls for the owls, I can pretty
well say that my "mystery call" isn't an owl. The closest I've been able
to come up with is one of the Night-Herons, though it's not quite
right. Every call I've heard for them has them calling in a fairly steady
pattern---call..wait...call...wait, for numerous calls. This is calling in
a set of 3 calls with a long wait, and then 3 calls, but the sound of the
call is a pretty good match for what I've been hearing. Obviously, they
really shouldn't be here now, and I'll be curious to see if I hear this
call again after the front that just went through.
Thanks for everyone's suggestions/help.

Dear Robin,
I'm not making any predictions here, but I do read in the Stokes Field
Guide to Birdsongs that one of the Northern Hawk-Owl's calls is: "a sharp
'keowp,' similar to the Green Heron's call."
Wouldn't that be exciting? Wishful thinking, but let me know.
I have the 3 CD set that I'd be happy to lend to you.
Warm regards,
