VA Birders,
Four birders from the Williamsburg Bird Club traveled to King William County
and the Pamunkey River area yesterday, 20 December 2006, to search for three
Greater White-fronted Geese that had been observed earlier in the week on a
pond near Chericoke. In a pond that was reported to have 1000's of Canada
Geese earlier in the week, there were only a few hundred geese and not
nearly the movement reported earlier.
Our ace birder, Bill Williams from the Center for Conservation Biology at
William and Mary, spotted a Cackling Goose among the 100's of Canada Geese,
but alas, there were no Greater White-fronted Geese. The thousands of geese
were obviously somewhere else and the white-fronted were most likely with
them.
In the afternoon we drove down to The Pocket near the Pamunkey Indian
Reservation on the Pamunkey River. There was no sign of the Eurasian Wigeon
seen previously, but there were over 75 Tundra Swans, Dunlin, Greater
Yellowlegs, Wilson's Snipe, and of course, the American Coots. Very few
geese.
The final tally was 60 species counted starting and ending in West Point.

Alex Minarik, Fred Blystone, and Shirley Devan.
Again, if you go to this area, please respect the MANY no trespassing signs
and stay on the state road ways. Keep in mind it's hunting season, too.
By the way, the Pocket is a "hot spot" in eBird in the area of West Point,
