The Canada Goose flock on the eastern extension of Crystal Lake in Cape
Charles holds one Cackling (Richardson's) Goose as of today, as well as 8
Redhead,
5 Ring-necked Ducks, and smaller numbers of Hooded Merganser, Bufflehead, and
Ruddy Duck. The Allen's Hummingbird continues to thrive, eating emerging
midge-like insects today in the 60-degree weather! This morning was
particularly pleasant: a Peregrine Falcon (ad. male) over the house, a
Sharp-shinned Hawk
(ad. male) feasting on Brown-headed Cowbird in the side yard, Hermit Thrush,
American Woodcock, and Yellow-bellied Sapsucker in the backyard, and 2 adult
Bald Eagles literally on the beach flats at Cape Charles beach - unlike all
others I have seen here, these 2 would not flush, even for dogs. I think they
must be the Bay Creek pair.
Merry Christmas to all,
Ned Brinkley
