Everyone is invited to CVWO's "Autumn Celebration" where The Observatory
commemorates its 12th year during its Annual Meeting at Best Western Sunset
Beach Resort from 3 to 6pm, located at the Southern Tip of the Kiptopeke
Peninsula. Meeting coordinator is Ruth Beck (rabeck at wm.edu or 757
221 2217) who asks that attendees contact her with your names.
Before the meeting begins, CVWO will hold a Rarities Round-up at the
Southern Tip. All are welcome to explore the area and find late autumn
migratory wonders. Last year we found the following highlights:
American White Pelican, Great Cormorant, American Bittern, Cattle Egret,
Yellow-crowned Night-Heron, White Ibis, Brant, Eurasian Wigeon, Golden
Eagle, Merlin, Black Rail, Virginia Rail, Sora, American Woodcock, Iceland
Gull, Eurasian Collared-Dove, Barn Owl, Long-eared Owl, Northern Saw-whet
Owl, Northern Rough-winged Swallow, Cave Swallow, Barn Swallow, Sedge Wren,
Marsh Wren, Clay-colored Sparrow, Baltimore Oriole, Purple Finch, and Pine
Siskin.
A cell phone chain will help keep everyone "in the loop". We have arranged
access to a few normally closed areas and there is even a kayaking team!
Learn first hand about the conservation value of this important bird area.
Come on down, bring your friends, and/or link up with other birders and try
to find the next unusual species! Everyone is welcome!
Please note that the CVWO has arranged its meeting just after the Veteran's
Day Federal Holiday so many of you may be able to make a leisurely drive
down the day before. I hope to be on the Eastern Shore Friday so if you
wish to link up then please let me know.
