Hoping that the bluebells would make for a very
interesting and diverse bird walk with a mix of
high school Biology and Ornithology students, I
headed to Bull Run (NVRPA) Park from 7-9:30 AM.
(The bluebells were beautiful and should peak
next week. Also in bloom were spring beauty,
violets, harbinger of spring, cut-leaved
toothwort.)
A hermit thrush flushed from the parking lot edge
as we pulled in.
7 common loons and 5 double-crested cormorants
flew over the parking lot as we exited the
minibus.
We also noted the following highlights:
160 chattering rusty blackbirds
3 pairs of wood ducks
our first blue-gray gnatcatchers of the year
singing white-throats and juncos
singing ruby-crowned kinglets
golden-crowned kinglets
singing winter wren
nice comparisons of the songs of titmouse,
cardinal, and carolina wren for these beginning
birders.
yellow-bellied sapsucker feeding from its sap-
wells
2 brown creepers
8 great blue heron
singing yellow-rumped warblers but no other
warblers.
All amphibians were silent.

From there we turned right onto Compton Road and
drove a few miles to the lake at UOSA (sewage
treatment plant).
As we used the scope to study the varying
plumages of the 78 Bonaparte's Gulls lined up on
part of the treatment facility (searching
unsuccessfully for rarities)all of a sudden the
Bonies took flight.  We looked up and saw a
merlin, uninterested in the gulls, zoom past.

In the lake were a few dozen geese, about a dozen
dc cormorant, 3 gadwalls, 2 mallards, a horned
grebe, and a drake wood duck.  An osprey circled
overhead but did not stop to fish. Other gulls
present were 50ish ring-bills and a half dozen or
so herrings.  We also got great scope-views of a
very fluffy red fox along the shore of the lake.

All the best
Fred
