Virginia Birders,
Ed and I spent Memorial Day hiking at Guesses Fork, where I grew up, in
Buchanan County. The highlight of the hike was a Brewster's Warbler that I
identified in an Autumn Olive tree on the edge of a strip mine site. Ed filmed
it a few minutes later, after my excited yells brought him running with his
video camera. The hybrid was singing a somewhat sloppy Blue-winged Warbler
song. We also had great looks at a pair of Kentucky Warblers. We ended the day
with 54 species, which included 13 species of warblers. We also saw and heard
four Yellow-billed Cuckoos and had great looks at an Acadian Flycatcher. A
